Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that it is selected and quoted as the direct answer to a specific question in Google’s featured snippets and People Also Ask panels, in AI Overviews, and in assistants such as ChatGPT Search, Perplexity and Copilot. Its unit of work is the passage rather than the page: search systems have retrieved and ranked individual passages for several years, and a generative answer engine lifts one because it answers the question cleanly on its own.
This is the narrower half of AI search work. Generative engine optimization concerns presence and framing across a synthesized response; AEO concerns one thing: being the source quoted for a given question, with attribution. The practical inputs are question-shaped headings, an answer stated in the first sentence before any elaboration, markup where it is warranted, and content written for conversational follow-ups rather than for keyword strings.
